Smile-In-Action: The Saturday School programme, which is part of SHAWCO’s Academic Interventions Unit (AIU), is an innovative social enterprise initiative, which uses funding generated by their fee-paying tuition classes, SHAWCO SHINE, to enable learners from poor families to benefit from the same quality after-school tuition programme. All SHAWCO’s AIU programmes are held on Saturday mornings at UCT’s Upper Campus. Lessons are taught to small manageable sized classes by experienced professional educators, using a curriculum aligned with the Western Cape Education Department. Subjects covered include Mathematics, Physical Science, Accounting, English and Life Sciences. Students on the SHAWCO SHINE Programme may choose a minimum of two and a maximum of three subjects for the year with Mathematics being compulsory. Classes are from 9:00am until 14:20pm on Saturday mornings at UCT’s Upper campus and attendance is tightly monitored to ensure that learners make the most of this learning opportunity. Learners are tested throughout the year to monitor their academic progress. Due to funding restrictions SHAWCO AIU is only able to admit 200 of the 450 applications received from Grade 11 learners at township schools who want to be part of Saturday School in 2015. Places are still available for SHAWCO SHINE, which offers quality Saturday School tuition at an affordable cost at UCT. Applications are open until 5 December 2014 and further information is available by calling 021 404 7751 or email [email protected] or visit SHAWCO SHINE at - shawco.org/index.php/shawco-shine
