Smith, the lone Canadian to reach a final at the 34-country competition, had difficulties with the landing of his first of two vaults and wound up with a score of 14.188 points. Nguyen Ha Thanh of Vietnam, who topped the field in the qualification on Friday, won the gold medal with a score of 15.013 points. Pavel Bulauski of Belarus took the silver with a score of 14.763 and Tomi Tuuha of Finland and Hoang Cuong of Vietnam shared the bronze with an identical score of 14.550. Smith and teammate Evan Cruz, also of Halifax, who competed in the pommel horse event but did not qualify for the final, are both reserves for the Canadian men’s team at upcoming world gymnastics championships in Antwerp, Belgium.
