Smoke Gets in Your Eyes~Oscar Peterson “Love blurs your vision; but after it recedes, you can see more clearly than ever.”― Margaret Atwood, Cats Eye Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, (15/8/1925–23/12/2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for their 1933 musical Roberta. It was sung in the original show by Tamara Drasin and originally recorded by Gertrude Niesen on October 13, 1933, on the Victor label 24454. It was performed by Irene Dunne for the 1935 film adaptation, co-starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Randolph Scott. Possibly the most famous version was recorded in 1958 by The Platters, which became a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 — it reached number three on the R&B charts in 1959 — and on the UK charts, where it spent five weeks at the top in February and March of that same year. It has been covered by numerous artists, beginning with Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra with Bob Lawrence on vocal, which went to the top of the charts in 1934, and including Nat King Cole, who first covered it in 1946. It also featured in Lovely to Look At, a 1952 remake of Roberta, where it was sung by Kathryn Grayson. In 1956, Vic Damone covered this song with a very different rendition, which became one of his most famous songs. Jerome David Kern (27/1/1885–11/11/1945) was an American composer of musical theatre and popular music. One of the most important American theatre composers of the early 20th century, he wrote more than 700 songs, used in over 100 stage works, including such classics as Ol Man River, Cant Help Lovin Dat Man, A Fine Romance, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, All the Things You Are, The Way You Look Tonight, Long Ago (and Far Away) and Who?. Otto Abels Harbach, born Otto Abels Hauerbach (18/8/1873–24/1/1963) was an American lyricist and librettist of about 50 musical comedies. He is most remembered for being Oscar Hammerstein IIs mentor and was one of the first librettists to believe that songs should be woven into a show, not just placed there. He is also considered one of the first great lyricists, because most of the others were considered hacks. This was because the shows usually didnt care about lyrics, just the music, the costumes, and the stars. Some of his more famous lyrics are for Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Indian Love Call and Cuddle up a Little Closer, Lovey Mine. Lyrics: They asked me how I knew my true love was true, I of course replied something here inside cannot be denied. They said someday youll find all who love are blind. When your hearts on fire, you must realize smoke gets in your eyes. So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed to think they could doubt my love. Yet today my love has flown away I am without my love. Now laughing friends deride tears I cannot hide, Oh so I smile and say, when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes..
