Smoothhounds are sharks. While not preferred, their fins (which are exempted from all US east coast state fin bans) are sent to Asia for shark fin soup. Their fins can also be confused with those from a lot of other shark species, including ones that fishermen are not allowed to keep. To be enforceable, finning bans should require that ALL sharks are landed with their fins attached. Smoothhounds deserve protections from finning and overfishing, just like other sharks. And yet, the state of Maryland imposes no smoothhound catch limits and is proposing the worlds weakest finning ban for just this species, thereby putting many species at risk. This Southern Fried Science blog post tells you how you can help fight the flawed finning policy (feel free to urge catch limits while youre at it). Thank you for your help!
