Sneak Peek to my contribution to SketchTravel2. And my interview.... 1. Can you do a short introduction of yourself? What do you do? I am 68 this year, married, one wife, two children, five grandchildren. I retired from medical practice 14 years ago and since then have been involved in Community Development in rural communities. We have found the use of sketches facilitate communication especially where levels of literacy are low. 2. What inspired you to sketch in the first place? As a medical student I often used sketches to learn anatomy and pathology. In 2010 after I retired from medical practice I decided to take up drawing as a hobby and I was inspired by Betty Edwards book, Drawing on the right side of the brain . When I read in the newspaper about Urban Sketchers Singapore book launch at URA building 2011, I went to meet them. I soon started attending the monthly sketch walks. 3. Why did you draw this particular piece for the Sketchtravel Singapore book? When I was a teenager Tiong Bharu was one of the areas where I lived. As a medical student I had another 5 years working and living around there. Up on Outram Hill is this tomb of two of my ancestors. This tomb also ties in with my passion for educating people about the heritage of Bukit Brown Cemetery. 4. What are the art tools you used for this piece? I normally sketch using a Hero 366 pen and platinum Carbon black ink. I decided for this project I would use Noodlers Singapore Sling and I purchased a blood red Parker Vectir Std FP medium nib for the job. I did a red series in preparation and found that I often got a better effect by complimenting with black. My Platinum Carbon black ink is loaded into a Shaeffer Targa Laque Filigree (Model 1044) 5. What memories does your neighbourhood hold for you? Lunchtime at the Tiong Bahru triangle making goo goo eyes at an enchanting lady medical student (I got to marry her). 6. Whats the hardest thing to draw for you? Moving animals . 7. Whats the easiest thing to draw for you? Bones!
