Snow has fallen in parts of Victoria that rarely see snow, as a cold snap grips parts of the state. Melbourne recorded its coldest day of the year on Friday, managing a top of just 8.3 degrees Celsius and at Mt Hotham, in the states alpine region, the apparent temperature dipped to -19. There were reports of snow falling north-west of Melbourne at Mount Macedon, Kyneton and Trentham, and there has also been snow at Erskine Falls near Lorne, Ballarat and in the Otways, in southern Victoria. The weather bureaus Scott Williams said snow was expected down to 400 metres. Theres been a lot around the Ballarat area and that general area between Bacchus Marsh and Ararat really, all through those western ranges, he said. Theres been snow around the Macedon, Trentham area and the Otways and just in the hills above Lorne. It ought to be snowing in the Dandenongs looking at whats going on with temperatures and the current radar. Mr Williams said the cold front was blowing frigid, squally air across the state. We thought the snow would be to lower elevations than the previous occurrence this winter and that it would affect many more places including all of the outskirts of the Melbourne area, he said.
