Snow meant joy to a little kid . Snow days off from school were like Christmas. The weatherman would mention a possibility of snow (Don Kent) and the chatter would begin. WEIM radio had a weather line that contained a recorded message of an announcer reading the latest weather forecast. I would call that thing ten times a day hoping for good news about snowstorms and potential days off. Every Sunday during winter ended with a Hail Mary, maybe it will snow and school will be called off..........to get up in the morning and have no school was so wonderful, and when it happened I knew just what to do. Get out of bed early and work ten times as hard as i would have worked if there was school. I had several neighbors who expected me to come and shovel their drives and walks and that all went on before breakfast time....Ginger Lolli was a sweet old woman who spoiled me rotten with food and money in return for some snow removal. Next came Mrs Castriotta who had a bit more real estate to clean but she paid well .....while I did those two neighbors another neighbor would see me and call me over to their place next. Finally I climbed up to the top of Florence Roberges house and shoveled her roof....by that time I was soaked through and through and my feet were a ball of wrinkles....so...I climbed the steps at 248 6th street and entered my kitchen....off with my boots, off with my socks (which I placed on top of the metal radiator in the kitchen, drying the sock for reuse and stinking up the kitchen....I would hang up all my wet clothes to dry and sit down to breakfast....my mother made stacks of pancakes and I drank a quart of milk before 7:30 and I was ready to run off and blow every last dime that I earned this morning.....Newberrys, Grants , Rockdales, Giguere Drug Store and Carberrys News were on my hit list....I bought stamps for my stamp collection, always an egg full of Silly putty, board games, candy and ice cream, records and then, the creme de la creme of the day...ic books....once again, soaking wet and by now accompanied by a friend, I would tramp up Third Street where I would buy all the comic books I could afford...horror books, super hero, funny books and especially the Sad Sack comic and Walt Disney Comics.....I was in love with the printed word and the cartoon drawing.....I would lug all of this stuff home , by now it was 11:00 AM and I had the rest of the day to play with stamps and games and read comic books while I ate candy and ice cream and listened to music or watched TV!!!!!!! When 2:20 came I realized that the party was over and a small dark cloud passed over my soul, but there was still sledding to look forward to and supper and Major Mudd and the Three Stooges......and then..it was a school night again and my stomach made that familiar turn as I contemplated the end of the party and the inevitability of school...yecchhhhh!
