Snowfall made me a little more spontaneous today. My dance class was cancelled so I accompanied a friend to a percussion recital instead... I had no idea how fun this was going to be -- The way words have an energy in the colors, textures, and images they invoke, so too do percussion instruments. The sounds from the marimba are very... Woody, light, reminds me of the way light shifts and moves between leaves of a tree. Shimmery almost, but not quite because each note is so clear and distinct. The woodblocks have a clopping type of texture but it changes depending on what you hit it with. It makes that sound you can make by clicking your tongue on the roof of your mouth... And the timpani just reminds me of strength. And going into battle, whatever that must feel like. I could feel myself gearing up for something although I was just sitting in my seat... Plus, the striking motion of the percussionist and the beating of the membranes invoked images of the ballet move frappé... It made me want to strike something with my foot to the beat of the music... In a good way. So yes! It was very interesting. Im so impressed with all the imagery and sounds and feelings from the recital... And the best part is my friend in the audience also plays percussion instruments so I could ask him all sorts of questions. My favorite one was, what are the sticks with the balls at the end called? Mallets. Ah, I see. And what about just the sticks? ...Sticks. ☺️☺️☺️
