Snowy Mountains U3A Bulletin July 2013 Better late than never.....but so much has been going on that I keep waiting for just one more thing before sending this out! For sure there’ll be another thing after I push the go button.... 1. The Shed (as it has come to be called but we need some alternative that represents the true class of the place as it will be in the months to come) We have signed an agreement with Dean and Louise and collection of building materials has begun. Donations of all sorts are coming in from many enthusiastic sources, including members and local businesses. I am trying to keep a list of these – I’ve got to be good though! Our workroom at Polo Flat is chockers and many of us have other items at the ready. The big front gates will be open during business hours and we have a key to the back gate for after hours use. We will be there on and off quite a lot so if you see us there then do come in and help, be a gopher, just croon and encourage, or even make a cuppa for our brawny yet highly intelligent workers. Where is it? Between ‘Liquorland’ and ‘Your House’ in Sharp Street. 2. FRRR Grant We got $1,994 from Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and they have been fantastic to work with. We need to spend it within 12 months. This will be perfect for assisting us with establishing computer facilities, printing services and internet access in our ‘shed’. 3. The Cooma Ex-services Club They are working really hard to accommodate us even though they are renovating on a truly drastic scale. Looks fantastic! It does mean that some courses are planned and on hold until we can get a permanent space. They are due to complete their renovations in a week or so but they are yet to organise where they will be fitting in all the groups that they accommodate so can’t give us any indications as yet. 4. Fundraising We have started the $1 contributions per person per session as planned and it is working out well. Fran Hampton has distributed cute little boxes for each course. She will collect the contents monthly for a while until we have a clear idea of how we are going. Each group arranges its refreshment funds independently. We had a fundraising BBQ at Woolies last Saturday and cleared $166. Thanks go to those of us who huddled over the warmth of the BBQ to achieve this. We just couldn’t face doing a stall at the Rotary markets the next day so we are sorry if you cried when we were missing. 5. Course News • With the chaos of the ‘shed’ and the club’s renovations we are somewhat in limbo so much is on hold. These include Wine Appreciation, Comparative Religions, Line Dancing, Ascent of Man, Rise of Western Culture, Tracing Ancestry, Grief and Loss, games including Backgammon, Chess, Mah-jong, Trivia etc and Jigsaws!!!! Phew! • Aviation: Starts tomorrow, Wednesday 24th July, with a trip to Adaminaby Airfield. Muster at 40 Egan Street at 10am. Please call Adrian if you are going on 0427 812 670 or at [email protected]. • DIY at Polo Flat with Nick Lette is here until late August. We have projects begging to be completed including a bird house and some upholstery. He will be there from next Tuesday 30th July from 1.30pm and so will we! Plans for ongoing sessions and a new beginners course are in the pipeline but as I am away for early August we will look that it then. She presented to our last committee meeting and outlined that she is keen to run interesting writing workshops on weekends with email and phone contact between, culminating in the production of something significant. She is making up a plan for us all to examine. Contact me on 6452 3112 or [email protected]. • Introduction to the Ukulele: Adeline Perrett is interested in commencing introductory course for complete beginners in ukulele starting Monday 2nd September weekly until 23rd September inclusive. BYO Ukulele 10am to 11.30am at a venue to be advised - hopefully at our ‘shed’. Expressions of interest to her on 0418 200 161 or on adelineperrett@hotmail. • As spring comes....when was that again? Yes SPRING will come again! Jennifer is keen to start her group to do each other’s gardens together when it warms up. 0447 426 857 or on jenmaynic@hotmail. • Trips: there are expressions of interest in going to the Wild Brumby for an educational visit to see how they make their distilled mixtures. We will have designated drivers for a day in August tba. Another idea is to go to the National Art Gallery in Canberra to see the Turner exhibition and have lunch there.
