So 19 years ago today I was reminded that my wife and I shared our first kiss. It was a bitter sweet day as it was supposed to be our first date. It was put aside because it was the day I lost a friend. Selena was not just a rising star, she was a friend that I met through my days in radio. Ill never forget I was on the air at Club 98.3 in Corpus Christi, when we got a phone call saying Selena had been shot. We were all in shock and not wanting to believe it. Then at 1:05 pm we got a call from a reliable source that she was gone. It was one of those slow motion type deals, where you are hoping it was a dream. My boss told me I had to make the announcement NOW! Live on the air. I opened the Mic and my voice started to tremble, Today, at 1:05 pm, Selena was...... Thats all I could get out. My boss jumped in on the mic and made the official announcement. I couldnt believe it, my friend was murdered and I was going to break the news to all of South Texas. It was too much for me to handle, I still get choked up talking about it. Ill never forget her smile, her care free attitude, and the freedom she allowed herself with out the entourage or bodyguards. She wanted to be with her fans and they with her. Rhonda and I still talk about how our first date was sitting in front of the TV watching the events unfold with the standoff between her accused killer and the CCPD. 19 years later and it still bitter sweet. She will live on through her music and our fond memories of our beloved friend Selena.
