So 25 weeks have flown in in ……. It’s been a bit of a journey !!! From a bloke who struggled to do 15 miles on a 10 year old mountain bike ….. to a stocky bloke in lycra who can cycle 100km+ at a time ……. I’m as ready as I could be in 25 weeks, 9Kg lighter and I still have all the gear and no idea. I have learned a few things on the way : 1. Hills are still bad … but not as bad as they were …. 2. Like all things in life there are as many nice cyclists as there are *rsehole cyclists …. It’s just you notice the latter more than the former. 3. The Billy Connolly line that “There is no such thing as bad weather, only incorrect clothing.” is doubly true in cycling ! 4. Modern cycling is a VERY hi-tech sport and far from cheap ……. That’s why most middle aged cyclists drive Audi’s and BMW’s ….. and it shows !!!!!! 5. There are more cyclists on the road than there were when I was 16 ….. and none of them are delivering newspapers ! 6. I HATE cycling in large groups …. where generally the *rseholes drive the agenda Thanks must go to ROBYN EADIE ( my daughter ) has been a star and trained on the 100km route with me and waited for me at the top of hills …. She’s done as many training miles as me and hasn’t complained once rain or shine … YOU ARE A STAR :0) Helpful comments this month …. - Ed Alford’s beetroot concentrate( #rainbowpee ) is still causing my ablutions to resemble someone with renal failure …. but I’m still getting up the hills so it must be good stuff ! - Pete Jung says I have balls and buns of steel …… too heavy mate … they’re titanium ( I’m a roadie) - Donna Kennady says she likes the stories … especially the painful ones ….. there’s something slightly wrong in that methinks ! Did a weekend run with Sandy in the Surrey Hills ( which sound so suburban ) till you have to actually cycle up them … holy feck …… 2 x CBB Category 3 climbs and 2 x CBB Cat 4 climbs in 30miles ( Ed Alford probably does this as a warm up ) but for me they were ABSOLUTE MURDER ( said in best “Taggart” accent) …. Shere Road, Sandy Lane, Leith Hill and Ranmore Common …. I will remember them for some time . As a final humerous aside my son Sam ( aka “The Flying Scotsman”) sent me the folloing which made me spit a little of bit of coffee over BP’s IT assets … it’s probably a bit cycling specific but for those who ride … enjoy. youtube/watch?v=Wx2e9jSSK6E&feature=youtu.be So FINALLY ….. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU all who have donated…… I HAVE REACHED (EXCEEDED) MY TARGET in terms of cash raised and also level of fitness achieved. For those who would still like to donate thiis GREAT charity please do and the details are below. THE RIDE IS ON WEDNESDAY 25th JUNE for those interested …… I’ll be the one IN LYCRA! Once again .. a short synopsis of what RedR do … it’s a GREAT charity and if you can spare the time please have a look : RedR is an abbreviation of “register of engineers for disaster relief” and was originally a register of people who were trained to help in response to disasters. Today around 7000 to 8000 people a year are trained with up to 10% being engineers. Me Included, I supported the Armenian Disaster Relief efforts in 1988/9. RedR acts to ensure disaster-prone communities are resilient by giving them practical life-saving skills, advice and support, which help them prepare for, respond to and recover from natural and man-made disasters. The ultimate vision of RedR is a world in which sufficient competent and committed personnel are available and responding to humanitarian needs. So I am raising funds for RedR, an international disaster relief charity that trains aid workers, including many engineers, giving them the skills to prepare for, and respond to major floods, earthquakes, droughts and conflict. Every £ you donate will be matched by BP, so please give generously. JustGiving is a secure and efficient way to donate, saving time and cutting costs for the charity. To make a donation please visit my JustGiving page using this link justgiving/Robert-Eadie and click the “Donate” button, (£1, £2, £3, £4, £5, or £10 or more ) Ill take whatever you can afford to give :0) JustGiving sends your donation straight to RedR so it’s a quick and safe way to donate.
