So.... Aesthetic Perfection is getting a little beat up over their new single- Big Bad Wolf. I think some slack needs to be cut on this one. When I first heard the track, Ill admit. I thought, holy crap! This is different! I dont like it! Then after a couple of days I revisited it again and found that, while its certainly different, I actually enjoyed it. It made me think about why folks are upset about it. I think it has to do with what folk see as moving from writing great music to writing something that might not represent the roots that got the ball rolling for them (ala Metallica). If I look really hard in the industrial/electronic scene, I can find one or two bands that have been writing the exact same music for 15 years and have been negatively pigeonholed because of it. To this end, I ask what is the worse crime? Never evolving or evolving in a direction that opens you up to criticism? Some might say that Daniel should just start a new band as the music is different enough to demand it. Here is why that is not the best thing. Daniel and Tim have poured their lives into AP for years now. Its taken a shitload of work to get it to where it is. Ill estimate 10 years of hard work. I think its unfair to demand he drop AP simply because he wants to grow a certain way as a musician. AP is his job. It pays the bills. It keeps the lights on. He shouldnt have to risk all of that just to express himself. Ive been fortunate enough that in my band Ive been able to have avert thing from ambient to aggrotech to tribal to club electro to trip hop on one single cd without too much difficulty. If I can get away with this, I hope we can allow a man the write a song he wanted to write. Anyhow... thats my two cents. Take it or leave it. :-)
