So Annabelle and the rain slicker did not get along today - turns - TopicsExpress

So Annabelle and the rain slicker did not get along today - turns out it was meant for twice the size of dog she is and she was pretty sure we were trying to bury her in a tent. lol So, no rain slicker photos - sorry Kari! But, I did take two pics during her appointment while the resident doctor and then Dr. Meredith examined her. Kinda long but here it is - They did several tests on her for tear production, staining, any signs of reflexes in the eyes with light, etc. Absolutely no response in either eye to even the most intense light. They did pressure testing in the eyes and evidently not more than 20 is a good reading for eye pressure. She was at 57 in her left eye and 11 in her right. Dr. Meredith agreed that her right eye was not something fixable - an old injury that essentially healed itself and since it isnt causing her any pain or trouble, that eye isnt of any concern - it can be left alone. In regards to the left eye - he said there are 6 worst case eye diseases that a dog can have, and unfortunately, our little sweetie has all 6 of them in her left eye. He kept her there to do a procedure on her trying to immediately lower the pressure in the left eye. By the time they had me come back it was down to 31. We are now treating her glaucoma and the crater as her called it due to the ulceration, with two kinds of drops and some oral meds twice a day for two weeks. We have another appointment 2 weeks from today for a recheck to see what if any improvement we have had. However, he says he holds out zero hope for a return of sight. She would have had to have received treatment within days of the original problem and clearly she has gone likely years with no treatment. :( We now will be trying to determine if the eye can be saved. If it can, she will require drops (that are actually fairly inexpensive through them versus through my own vet - surprised me!) for the rest of her life. If the eye gets worse or doesnt improve at all, removal will be the only real option. He says he could remove the ulcer material, but since she has so much else going on and wont get sight back anyway from it, there is no benefit. After we get the pressure low enough in the left eye, she can be spayed and have her umbilical hernia repaired. But, he said that putting her under anesthesia right now, with the pressure as it was, would add to her challenges - and that is definitely not what we want for this angel. Side note - everyone at the clinic fell in love with her - I had no doubt - she is a special pup!
