So, Channel Four wants to air a comedy about the Irish Famine? Really???? We all enjoy a good laugh, and if ever there was a nation that can laugh at themselves, it has to be Ireland!! But this is definately a bad idea, a bit like a German Tv Company, airing a comedy show about the holocaust, for the entertainment of the german public. The thing is, it might not be such a bad idea, if it werent for the worrying level of ignorance in the UK, regarding Irish History. In fact, regarding British Colonial History in general. Having lived there, I was quite shocked at how little people know about the actions and consequences of British imperialism in Ireland, their closest neighbour!!!! But, this is easily explained as a result of the British education system and media both of which tend to air-brush and give a sugar coated version of its countries colonial past. Knowledge of empire is a matter of myth and history books at school are merely remnants of outdated propaganda, geared towards teaching young people about how civilized its empire was, effectively glorifying it!!!! So, here is an idea Channel 4, Since you have such a boundless sense of humor, how about creating a comedy based on the IRA bombing campaigns of British cities throughout the 70s and 80s. You could include the incident whereby the IRA almost blew the head off Margaret Thatcher, but missed because she got up to go to the toilet. (FACT!!!) Could be the makings of a great series!!!!!.................or not!!!!
