So. Clearly the NCAA talking heads got to Sally. First of all....room and board is already taxable. My kid just got a full ride, first thing I looked up was how much is taxable. Tuition for class is not. Secondly, they (northwestern) is asking for a stipend to cover extra costs as pay. We are talking less than $5k/year. For example, the NCAa caps book allowance at $400/semester. Last time I bought books, that barely would cover one class let alone 4-5. Dont believe me? Let me show you Javonns paperwork. In addition, theres no time to get a work-study or other job while playing sports. And god forbid a coach or football fan buy you a pizza because thats illegal according to the NCAA. Yet someone on a full scholarship thats not athletic doesnt have same restrictions because they dont have the NCAA determining how much milk or peanut butter an athlete should be allowed to have. Parents cant afford for transportation home? Too bad. Or a suit for game day? Too bad. NCAA would sanction the school if someone bought the kid a suit. And lastly, making sure that a player injured on the field or at practice has continued healthcare. And concussion treatment too. Look, Im very blessed that Javonn is talented enough to get a full scholarship, and while there are questions that need to be answered related to unionizing, this article completely missed the reasons it happened to begin with. Im disappointed that Sally didnt even quote or bring up anything from the college players themselves. m.washingtonpost/sports/colleges/nlrb-ruling-on-northwestern-football-players-wont-help-what-ails-college-athletics/2014/03/29/054e2942-b6af-11e3-b84e-897d3d12b816_story.html
