So, Constantine. I have to say I was - TopicsExpress

So, Constantine. I have to say I was underwhelmed. Spoilers!!! ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Two major problems: First of all it looks like theyre trying to shoehorn Johns entire backstory into the very first episode. We already know that his soul is damned because John, in his hubris, thought he could prevent the demon Nergal from taking the soul of Astrid to hell, and she still haunts his dreams. In the comics, that storyline took years to come to light. We heard rumblings about something terrible happening at Newcastle, and we learned bits and pieces over time, but we never knew all the details for a long time. Here, theres no mystery. They just dropped it all right down on the table for everyone to see. Disappointed. Second, Livs reaction to John. OK, all these weird things start happening to her and suddenly this creepy British guy appears. Demons are coming to get you, and only I can save you! he tells her. She immediately threatens to spray him with pepper spray. So far so good. Then her neighbor gets brutally murdered, and all of a sudden shes like, I completely and intimately trust you, crazy stranger. Lets get into a skeevy cab together and you and your friend can drive me out into the wilderness. That seems like a great idea! It happened too fast. I didnt believe for one second that Liv wouldve gone with John. There was no period of distrust, just, Hey, let me teach you how to use divination and by the way your daddy was a powerful magician and theres a demon after you. The pacing was completely off. Drove me crazy. Matt Ryan as Constantine was fine. He was snarky and overconfident and dark and broody and, above all, British. I liked the intro in the insane asylum; that was classic Constantine. But the main story? Ugh. I hope the series picks up sooner rather than later.
