So Harvey got a new chin strap pressure garment last week. I am - TopicsExpress

So Harvey got a new chin strap pressure garment last week. I am both very happy with it, and very mad. Harvey originally got a chin strap pressure garment about 4 months ago. It was a spare that the hospital had on hand, and they put it on and said it fit him so to use it instead of ordering a custom one. Yay for saving money! However, as Harvey got more dexterous, he learned out to pull out the silicone that I tucked into it every night. The silicone is critical to help break apart the scar tissue and add additional pressure, so I made the choice to have my burn unit order me a new custom fit pressure garment with the silicone stitched in. It was ordered on a rush, but through some delays at the burn center from incorrect ordering (frustrating) it didnt get here for another six weeks. We made an appointment and headed up to the burn unit last week for the fitting. Within seconds of picking the garment up, I knew it was a whole different ballgame from the garment weve been using for months now. It felt much higher quality, more rigid, and more formed to Harveys face. The silicone was stitched into the garment in such a manner to actually form directly to his scar on the angle. It was a much better built garment. When it came time to put Harvey in the garment, I was blown away by how much tighter it was the the previous garment. It was actually really difficult to get it pulled tight enough to fasten the velcro. There was very limited flexibility to the garment. This is a good thing. It means that pressure is actually being applied like it should be. It wasnt until I felt the new fit that I realized how poor the previous fit was. Which brings me to why I am both very happy and very mad. I am SO happy that the new garment fits so well and is applying pressure and silicone in all the places it is supposed to. However, I am so mad that we unknowingly had such a poor garment for so many months that was pretty much useless at doing its job. If we had gotten the custom fit garment right off the bat, Harveys scar would be doing so much better! In just the week that weve had the new garment, Harveys scar has significantly flattened/softened. I really think it is going to make a HUGE difference in his long term prognosis. Its so awesome. I just wish he would have had it months ago!! Chalk this up for another reason that moms should always listen to their gut instinct--If I hadnt forced the burn unit to order him a new one, wed still have the lackluster one that doesnt even help!
