So I am reading my DOGFIGHT book, and concerning tactics a few surprises. One, the pilots were not that smart, only the ones who lived were. Two, They really didnt have sophisticated tactics. Three, wigman DID stay with their leader. Four, only a small altitude advantage is needed. Five, the planes seldom turned. Six Speed is king. Seven, the Gaggle was the basic formation, everyone 16 or so, all in a close big fub ball where they could cover one another. Eight, the Germans lost 2.7 single engine fighters per each B-17 or B-24 shot worn (losses due to P-51s escorting and defensive fire) Ninehe P-51 could turn better than a FW-190. Hmm
