So I bought a Merckx frame and whilst I have been riding bicycles - TopicsExpress

So I bought a Merckx frame and whilst I have been riding bicycles for nearly 40 years, in the 90s I didnt care too much about what I was riding so long as it got me around and kept me happy. The Superlite paid $600 for in 1992 is still in service with basic bottom line shimano parts. That being the case, I know very little really about the 90s from which this frame was made and the idiosyncrasies of Belgian/italian steel frames. Now I take my cycling more seriously, (its a hobby, not just transport) I could build a modern bike in my sleep and know what components are best suited to it but when it comes to this retro build, I will be often lost. So if you dont mind, I would like to on occasion pester the group with a question or a two over the next 8 months as I build the frame up. Cool? So if I may, I would like to ask a question regarding head sets because it made sense to start there; I have been reading up on installing a threaded headset (never done previously beyond re-grease) and read a lot about how the headset needs to be carefully chosen and that the headstock should be reamed to suit it. I can see on a new frame this would be required, but on a used? Provided the headset is smooth and burr free it should be right to go or should I try and find a mechanic who 1, has the tools, and 2, knows what they are doing to install it? I have a press, or alternatively planned on using a bit of timber and a rubber mallet to install. Bad idea? The next issue is the brand. I am looking at putting a modern group on it, but with period seat post, stem, bars & wheels so I am thinking a period (or similar in modern) would be the way to go? New Record? or Chris King? Thanks
