So, I bought and downloaded a book that I saw at the convention this week to my Kindle. Its published by a major (big five) company. Its a debut novel, but should have had all those bells-and-whistles you hear about that make the traditional (odd word for it) route to publishing so much finer. The author has a horse that is half dead, in the middle of a desert, badlands - one bad leg, barely able to move. He has it LAY DOWN with its rider, who covers them both with a blanket... Seriously? That horse goes down like that, youll need a crane to get it back up - its probably dead. Horses, unless they absolutely cant stand, arent going to do that...they remain upright...when they do NOT it usually means the end, and CERTAINLY would mean the end in the case of a horse nearly too weak to stand in the first place... My point? The author (I suppose) can be forgiven not knowing as much as he might about horses, even though its a steampunky WESTERN set right after the Civil War. The editors though...who these days seem little more than not-great copy-editors, didnt catch it either... If it was covered - I mean, the author at least had the character worried that the horse could never get back up, that it was dying or dead because of being down, that would be one thing, but he snuggles up with it like hes done it before... ugh.
