So, I call one my clients today to remind him of our appointment - TopicsExpress

So, I call one my clients today to remind him of our appointment next week. He has been one of my most difficult clients due to the fact that his tardive dyskenisia (for the past 30 years) has left it very difficult for him to communicate, especially when he gets nervous, resulting in me having to completely re evaluate the way therapy sessions are done with him. Because he reacts well to/relaxes with music, I thought it would be a good idea to begin and end every session with music from some of his favorite artists along with play the music at a low volume throughout the entirety of the session, using it as talking point and a way to connect. Ive seen some progress but not enough to alleviate the feelings of frustration and incompetence that Ive had towards myself for not being able to help him. Today, after reminding him of our appointment next week, he told me how much he appreciated what Ive done during therapy thus far and how he really liked how Ive listened to him and made him feel like a valuable person. Not going to lie, I got REALLY emotional after he said this and had to struggle to keep myself composed for the remainder of the phone conversation. Lol. But this really helped me understand that every client is first and foremost a person, and often times, you as their therapist are the only one who may be there for them, to treat them as a human being, who matters and whose opinions and thoughts mean something. Today reminded me of why this is Gods will for my life.
