So I did six hours of volunteer service tonight at the USO in the airport tonight, as I have done for the past four Wednesdays, giving free massage to military members in transit. But tonight will be a night I remember forever. A man in his fifties with comes walking over and asks how the whole free massage thing works. He is wearing a USO shirt, and below his sleeve on his forearm is a cross anchor tattoo. I smile at him and say, I like your crossed anchors. And he smiled and said, yeah, ole drunk Singapore tattoo. Know anything about boatswains mates? And I said, well sure. Im engaged to one. And I also served. He asked where I served and when I said Comstock, his eyes lit up and he asked if I knew Dale Kintz. I started laughing and he said yes, and proceeded to tell me about when Chief Kintz was a seaman and he was his second class. Taught him everything he knows. We laughed and traded sea stories and had even more laughs about people in common that we both knew, like BMC Hypolite and bosn Whitehead. After I gave him a massage, he told me he wanted to show me something, then got out his laptop and showed me that he designs challenge coins and belt buckles for BMs now. I pointed to one on the screen and said, I really like that one. Then, he reached in his back pack and pulled out a replica, and said, for your fiancé. On the house. I was so stunned by this act of kindness that I asked if he had any belt buckles that I could purchase from him as well, and he did. He also gave me his favorite coin for free. Because of this person, today has been the best, easiest day since Caleb left. It somehow almost made me feel closer to him, and all my other deck friends aboard Comstock. Random acts of kindness, people. They really do exist. And Caleb, youll be receiving these gifts in your next care package! I love you!
