So I finally watched the movie Milk. I am at a loss of words for Harvey Milks legacy. This man who did so much for the fight for gay people to be considered human beings in America. Its a very humbling reminder why we fight for our rights. People think we are fighting for just marriage, but no that is not the only thing we are fighting for. In the 70s and later we could be denied housing solely based on the fact that we are gay. We could loose our jobs (and can still to this day in quite a few states) just because we are gay. In the 60s and 70s and 80s you could be murdered and the police wouldnt investigate, they would go into gay bars and arrest you just for being gay, the police would beat you and some times even kill you for being gay. Harvey Milk stepped up and changed that. We have come a long way since then, but we still have such a long way to go. And it takes courages people to stand up and fight, stand up and say I WILL NOT TAKE THIS ANY MORE. There are people in my life right now who are doing that here in South Dakota. Nancy Rosenbrahn and her wife Jeanie, David Patton and Tamara Patton, Sabrina LaCroix, Kim Lāthe, Cori McCreery, Clay Schweitzer and Jeremy, and so many others that i could list. These people are standing up and fighting because what they see is wrong. I am hoping that standing with them as i have, i am honoring Harvey Milks legacy and all the other gay men and women in history who fought so that i could come out in high school, so that i could have a job and not fear loosing it, so that i could live my life without fear from one day to the next. So that this small town boy from the midwest who almost killed himself in high school can go on living his life to the full extent because he is able to. And all I can offer is a humble thank you.
