So I go back to bed this afternoon due to a terrible illness (the worst cold known to humanity, ever) and I wake up to the news that Joe Cocker has taken the first step on The Great Way Back. When I was about 15 Woodstock came out in the cinemas again and I bunked off school to watch it on an afternoon show. I used to bunk off a lot back then, but only to go to the flicks. I was absolutely gobsmacked at every act on Woodstock, from Jimi to Ten Year After to Santana, even Sha Na Na. And of course, Joe. Years later I heard this song and I firmly believe that an artist like doesnt sing songs unless they believe the story of the song, especially at this time when he was riding a wave. Although Herbie, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have done a storming version of this song (which Ive posted often) Ive chosen this clip from the legendary Mad Dogs and Englishman tour. You can see the freedom in their faces. I love that. It was a time when we thought we really could do it. So the fact that he sang these lyrics, and that they totally made sense to me, meant that he and I were kindred spirits. Its worth listening to the words closely. Because thats the truth, Ruth. RIP Joe. See you next time x x x x https://youtube/watch?v=-407iUd_pFY
