So I got news last night that my friend Greg Thomas father Jerry Thomas past away after a battle with cancer. I decided to post this here so that those of you that have known Jerry or not would hear about him and his life. Jerry was my boss during my high school years and then later when I worked as a part timer on the weekends. He was the first person I had ever worked for that I would call self made, I had worked for large companys before and some family run businesses but never an individual owned business. I once had a coworker tell me, If you start a job make sure you can finish it, with Jerry it was more like, make sure you can finish it with pride. He was a hard ass but he never asked you to do something he wouldnt do himself. When business was slow he would hand out boxes and point to the precisely groomed landscaping at the gas station, he would bark, Fill this with weeds fat boy and give me that slight shit eating grin he had. Unfortunately this was almost impossible, there were no weeds, he made sure of it, but I would try to find something to fill the box. A few days later I would drive by before work and he would be out looking for weeds himself, pride. I drive by that place every few weeks during my travels, it has changed brands and hands a few times, the building looks tired and is dirty, the hustle and bustle is gone, the lines of people are gone and I am sure the business is barely holding on. I am glad Jerry hasnt seen it like that as it makes me sad knowing that all the hard work put into the place is gone, it clearly shows that people make the difference in business. Rest in peace Jerry, you worked hard and it showed and you touched more lives than youll ever know.
