“So I guess youre 12 now?” asked my youngest in reference to the 12 candles on my birthday cake. “Do you wish you were 12 again?” No. “What about 30?” Thirty is tempting. If I was thirty, I could watch them grow up all over again. I could watch them grow from little guys that could barely do sit-ups from the weight of their helmets, to the fine young men they are today. Tonight I got the best birthday present a father could hope for. I got to watch my sons team play football. They didnt have the numbers on the sidelines. Almost every one of them played every snap on offense, defense, and special teams. By the end of the game they were spent, yet they played on, continuing to give when they had nothing left. They didnt quit after their opponent turned a botched punt attempt into a quick score to take the lead. They fought back and answered with a touchdown of their own to tie it up late in the 4th quarter. Most teams would have folded, but these boys dont know quit. They didnt have superior numbers, size, strength, or talent, yet there they were, battered and bruised, giving it everything they shouldnt have had left. What is it they have then? What keeps them going when most grown men would lay down and quit? What they have, the world is in short supply of. What they have is intangible. It cant be taught. It cant be bought. What they have is seemingly endless quantity is HEART. They are much more than friends and teammates. They are a brotherhood. The Brotherhood of Heart. Im so proud of you Eric and team. You are already more man than most, each and every one of you.
