So I have a lady colleague, she is a single lady..and one fine day she gets a call..a social worker has a premature baby in a teaching hospital in need of help.. Baby born premature..to a teenage unmarried mother.. Baby born extremely ill..with a single digit platelet count..normal value is 150-450.. The liver was not functioning..there was a bleed in the brain.. And the caller asked..do you want the baby..without hesitation..she said YES.. The problem is the hospital could not make a diagnosis..but baby recovered..and colleague took her to another hospital which made the diagnosis..:-) of course the hospital we are working in.. The baby had congenital CMV, an infection passed on by mom to baby..which is a rare disorder. So because the baby has congenital CMV my colleague has to import a drug to be taken for 6 months of the babys life..and the baby was cured.. But then they found out baby is deaf..also a consequence of the infection..and baby had to undergo bilateral cochlear implant..and all this within 2 years of being born.. Anyway baby is now almost 3..running around..active and pampered and going to nursery.. WELL DONE MOM..pat on the back..and love always.. Is funny how a call can change your life..and someones elses..
