So I have begun the study of the medieval German longsword - TopicsExpress

So I have begun the study of the medieval German longsword (Johannes Lichtenauer school) and the world of HEMA, and last night was my very first class in Wantagh...so awesome. I dont think I did too bad, and cant explain how psyched I am to have found the Long Island Historical Fencing Society...will be spending my Tuesday evenings in 2015 learning from instructor Brad Rangell and the guys, who were all super nice and encouraging so I didnt feel like a total noob. Already got my shoes and cup, ordered the HEMA fencing helmet...will need to save up for the longsword but in the meantime the LIHFS bring extra practice swords for members to use in classes, which is nice. Anyway, I am glad to get off my ass and do something physically and intellectually challenging again. I hadnt taken any martial arts since 1996 when I was studying kung fu and Filipino stick fighting, and I missed it, and Ive felt so terribly out of shape. Turning 50 next June and I felt like it was time to pay more attention to that. I love hiking but its not something I enjoy in the winter, and gyms here are either too expensive or too far away to be practical. This has made me excited again to get fit, and it also ties into my deep interest in history. :)
