So I have refrained from making a status about this but it is getting very ridiculous. I think that overall, people are missing the point that Raven tried to make in the interview. She doesnt want to be soley associated with one label. As a Disney child, her success was built on her ability to relate to all races of young girls. Its not that she doesnt identify with Black but she also identifies with other creeds, nationalities and races because her career was built on her ability to do so. Furthermore, she is correct in saying that identifying with the term African-American is incorrect. Regardless of social issues in this country, the law states that if youre born in America, you are an American and the nationality is not assigned a color. We as humans who need to label and categorize assign it a color, but it is not automatically given one. However, bashing her for what she said only shows that you are only operating from a mindset of being a Black American and have yet to make the distinction for yourself that being Black and being an American, although commonly linked together, are two separate identifications.
