So I have seen a lot of my friends post both for and against Coke for their Superbowl Ad. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but heres mine for what it is worth: English is not the Native Language of The United States. English is the language that was forced upon people that were already here and dragged here. Native Americans had their own language, but even once we began colonization English wasnt the main language. A large chunk belonged to France and the people there spoke French. Part of our Nation actually was Mexico and belonged to Spain so those people spoke Spanish. And the part that was colonized by England...well...modern Spanish is easier to understand thy words. We are a nation built of immigrants, Irish, German, Middle Eastern, Asian, African, etc! Not to mention the fact that Puerto Rico is American and they too speak Spanish! I think people who have always seen just them represented in media tend to grow up believing that they are the only ones that matter, the original, the best. Its easy to overlook the experiences of others that we ourselves have never faced, and easy to take for granted how we are always the ones represented. But truth is, including others, welcoming more to the table of bounty we enjoy doesnt take anything off our plate, it just enriches the dinner conversation. To not consider other people and their native language as just as much American as you is easy and selfish and I would like to think as a whole we as Americans are better than that! That we are kinder and smarter and just...better than that! And what was the point of the commercial? What were they singing? America the Beautiful. Different languages, same song. How about we try stepping up to that heritage?
