So I invite my military friends to weigh in on this...lots of conjecture about the CIC not saluting his guard. From what I have researched, as the CIC he is not required, but protocol and simple respect, dictates it is an honor and entitlement for the CIC to return a salute from his subordinates. It is a privilege, and honor granted to the CIC, because he is a civilian while holding the office of the Presidency. As the CIC he does have the right to change this protocol, which obviously he has...Military code of conduct does specify that a salute done improperly, or haphazardly is a sign of disrespect. You are better off NOT saluting.It is also acceptable for the CIC to acknowledge a slaute with a hand shake. HOWEVER , the following picture does display this mans full contempt for our nations symbols, traditions, and rule of law. Unless protocol, otherwise changed by a proclamation issued by the CIC, he is required to show respect for the flag during the national anthem by placing his right hand over his heart as a sign of allegiance...THIS IS WHY HE DOES NOT....it speaks to the core of how this man really feels about this nation. If you had read his books this would not be of any surprise....
