So, I just applied for health insurance for the first time since I was in college. And, heres my honest experience with the Covered California website. Overall, the application process is long and frustrating. A lot of deductions you would normally take on your taxes dont seem to be allowed. Especially for the tax deduction for mortgage insurance seems disallowed. Many middle class tax payers will find that very unfair. Fortunately, I had so many black-and-white deductions associated with the 4-plex I own that my income falls well below the poverty line. In all, I was not frustrated with the overall cost, which was fair: $59 after tax credits. It was not frustrated with the level of coverage I was offered, it was also very fair as well. What bothered me most is that amount of information I have to supply to California to apply in the first place. I realize I give the Federal government already sees that information, but giving it to the state too feels a little invasive. I also abhor how often the website freezes or times out. I started at 4:00pm, and just got finished. Now that said, I havent come to any conclusion if Obamacare can or cannot work. I am simply participating in hopes that it makes, what I sincerely considered a corrupt system may become a little better. When my dad was dying, he had health insurance times three. The hospital still tried to send him home, when sending him home was an instant death sentence. He had worked his entire life to earn that peace of mind at the end of his life for himself and his family. The fact that any insurance company would clearly say, Well hes gonna die now so were not invested anymore, is immoral. Thats why I took today to try to enroll. I think I am; honestly I am still not sure. As far as I can tell I will be getting my first bill on 04/25/2014. If it works, cool, my family will be happy. If it doesnt, my conservative friends, you can all tell me you told me so. But even if youre right, the website does also allow me to cancel coverage and drop out. And there are two kinds of failures I see possible. The failure because it cant work, and the failure because we didnt give it a chance. If it does fail, I would prefer the reason not to be the latter.
