So, I just did a non-peer-reviewed anecdotal study on my own medications. The VA has prescribed be between 1200mg and 4000mg of Gabapentin (Neurontin) daily for the past 6 or so years, due to nerve damage in my spine. In the past 6 years, Ive experienced short term memory loss, and word making with mouth has been harrrrd. Ive been trying to get the VA to figure out what was causing my short-term memory loss, and have had a CT scan and a carotid ultrasound, as well as various blood levels checked out. They had no clue as to what was causing it. Recently, a friend told me that her (non-VA) doctor told her that short-term memory loss was a common side effect of Gabapentin. Nobody had ever mentioned that to me, nor did it occur to the VA docs when I brought it up, and even asked if it could have anything to do with my medications (I only take 2 prescriptions, Gabapentin and a very mild blood pressure med). They said no. Well, I did a little experiment over the past 2 weeks, and reduced my 1200mg dosage to 400 daily. My back hurts more, and Ive had a few sciatica flare-ups, but my mind is clear, my memory is better, and my communication skills have improved. Just ask Alison Watson and my employees. So, needless to say, the VA sucks, and since winter is coming, so will my back... or my brain... my choice. So, its either smart gimp, or dumbass stud until I get something figured out.
