So I just got a major thrashing from a local African American - TopicsExpress

So I just got a major thrashing from a local African American leader. She believed that by stating that we want to be identified in our own category as Caribbean-American, we are disrespecting African Americans and all they have done to build America for us to enjoy. In her opinion we are ALL African-American and should be proud of it. I explained that we are proud of African Americans, be we are also proud to be Caribbean American and dont want anyone ignoring that fact. I explained that aside from Marcus Garvey, Eric Holder, Colin Powell, Harry Belafonte and others who have helped build America, there are also nurses, educators etc from the Caribbean who help build this country daily and are not being recognized for the special categorization that IS our Caribbean heritage. I hope I get to talk to her more, because it was surprising to know that African Americans dont think of us as a unique group either. Any thoughts?
