So I just got out from watching The Giver, and it being one of my favorite books I feel the need to put in my two cents. I kept my expectations Low and it was thankfully not as bad as I thought it was going to be. If fact, even in my most likely biased opinion it was relatively enjoyable. That being said I do have a few grievances. Im not nitpicking about every little difference. Literature and film are two entirely different entities and I realize that but one major flaw bugged me. All the flashy technology in the film. Lois Lowry clearly states that they live simply. There is technology in the book but it is understated and only when necessary. Its clear they did this to make the film more appealing to a wider audience but I feel the movie would have been much better with 1/2 the budget and deeper character building. All in all it was okay but missed the point. Please, PLEASE read The Giver Quartet! Most people dont even know that there are four of them and together they are one of the most powerful stories Ive ever experienced. By all means watch the movie but give the books a chance too and form your own opinion.
