So I just had someone ask me directly, how could Richard Shermans behavior not be viewed as disrespectful to the sport by us as retired players? To most of us, I can guarantee you that Shermans interview had nothing to do with a disrespect for the game. Again, Richard Sherman is a professional athlete in the business of sports and entertainment. Hes created a persona that best allows him to thrive in the environment! Just to give you some perspective, I am a retired NFL player who left the game with many lingering memories pleasant and unpleasant alike. The game has helped provide me with quite a life on and off the field; but also a completely reconstructed right knee, sprained medial collateral in my left knee, broken right leg, broken right arm, sprained ankles, pulled hamstrings, numerous concussions, and finally cracked C5 & C6 vertebrae that forced me to retire! When I look back on some of the highlights (and lowlights) of my career, I sometimes find it hard to believe that I was at one time that crazy and reckless with my own health to do what I did for all those years! Then I think about the absolutely altered state of mind we put ourselves in to even participate in such an insanely dangerous activity! But then again, it seems that everybody within the football family (both fan and participant alike) seem to have a hard time admitting to the insanity we all engage in to justify joy in such an intrinsically hazardous activity as is football! However, as soon as someone pulls the mask off the insanity as did Richard Sherman, everyone wants to scream foul!
