So I just have to share to let you know about the hard work thats going into suicide prevention efforts around the state and the impact its making. Hats off to school staff, prevention center staff, health educators, youth service center staff, community organizations, survivors, parents, friends, gatekeepers, social workers, therapists, support professionals, legislators, anyone who attempts to keep our kids safe. It appears to be working. Results from the 2013 youth risk behavior survey (YRBS) (conducted by the CDC) show that 7.7% of high school students in Kentucky report they have attempted suicide. That number is still too high but it represents a whopping 29% decrease from the 10.9% who reported an attempt in 2011. Thanks go out to anyone who has taken the time to save the life of a child in your world. Who knows what our collective future holds because you cared. Want to learn how you can make a difference too? Start by adding the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to you phone. 1-800-273-8255.
