So... I just tried to calculate minimum wage, after taxes in Florida. At 40 hours per week (likely requiring two or more part time jobs) it comes to 251 dollars per week. If 25% goes to rent, you only have 188 for food, clothes, utilities, forget cable... Could you live off 188 per week, plus utilities? What if you had 2.5 kids and a white picket fence?? What things would you have to give up? Which ones would be easy, which ones would be the most difficult? Then,i multiplied it by 52 weeks, divided by 12 months and then took 25% of that number and came up with $270. What kind of rat hole can you find for 270...Seriously... This is a powerful mental exercise for everybody... If we make the assumption that every person working minimum wage moves from parents house, to roommates, to dual income household... And their roommates are NEVER late on the rent... Thats still only 540/month for a 2 bedroom... Talk about humbling and depressing thoughts... Everybody should feel thankful that they have what they have... I know I am. Remember this, the next time you can share and help a friend or stranger...
