So I keep receiving the 10 things you dont know about me requests. I keep my personal life personal. But here is something I am willing to share. 10 things most people dont know about rescue groups: Ten things you didnt know about rescue groups: 1. Rescue groups pull from local shelters animals that are red listed - which means those that are ill or simply scheduled to be euthanized. They do so out of their own pockets. They nurse the animals back to health and get to know their personalities before you adopt them. The same holds true to those they rescue off the streets or that you bring into their facility. 2. Most small rescue groups are all volunteer and have no paid employees. They personally foster and care for the animals in their homes or facilities and do not have large donors to off set costs. Every nickel, dime and quarter helps the animals and rescue is EXPENSIVE. There isnt a national healthcare program for animals, so that cost is sometimes factored into an adoption fee. 3. When you fail to spay or neuter your pets and choose to dump them at a rescue or shelter, you are part of the problem not the solution. Your children do not need to see the miracle of birth live - there are plenty of videos of this experience out there. Rescues and shelters are limited on space and when they refuse to take an animal or tell you it will be put down - it does personally hurt the person doing intake. 4. Until we reach at least 95% spay / neuter in the population the shelters will have a near impossible task to house the unwanted animals and will continue to put down at least 100 a day per shelter. SPAY / NEUTER! 5. When you come to a rescue and ask us to guarantee the animal will be 100% healthy and normal all the time - we do not have a crystal ball. Rescues rely on donations and those donations go into the medical costs, food, litter, toys and shelter of the animals. We do everything in our power to keep them healthy and safe, but just like humans we cannot predict that a year from now it wont get an upper respiratory infection. 6. Walking into a rescue facility and telling us I can get this animal cheaper on Craigslist or another facility is irrelevant to us. Our costs are NEVER reimbursed by the adoption fee. Rescues pay the cost for the spay / neuter, vaccinations, micro chipping, deworming, defleaing, feeding and medical bills from the moment that animal comes into their facility to the day it leaves and usually without government compensation or major cash donations to help. We are the voice and safe haven for that animal and do it for the love of animals. 7. There are breed specific rescues if you want a specific breed. You cannot custom order a pet. Telling me you only want blue eyed brown cats is truly the random act of the universe when it comes into a facility. But if you only want a Sheltie or Pomeranian or Siamese or Persian you can find one from a group dedicated to rescuing that specific breed. They will also discuss why that breed may or may not be right for you. A dog that needs lots of exercise in a small apartment is going to end up back in a shelter or rescue so dont be surprised if when they interview you, they say NO. 8. Most rescues require and adoption agreement and home visits because we want to be sure the fit is right for the animal and that you are committed to its care. They are our fur children before they become yours. If we show up to an apartment that says no pets and you tell us its okay we will ask the manager if it is okay 9. Rescue groups and foster homes are not hoarders. Our sole purpose is to put these animals in your home. When you buy a pet from a breeder they are in the business of selling animals. When you adopt a pet from a rescue, we are in the business of saving lives and finding good homes. We dont tell you what you want to hear, we tell you what you need to know. 10. Most rescue groups are not funded by larger rescue organizations. They rely on your donations and usually run at a loss. We do it for the love of the animal not to acquire massive amounts of money in foreign bank accounts. Donating directly to a small rescue supports the food, litter, medical costs, leashes, collars, and toys for an animal. It does not trickle down from the big organizations to us. Give direct to your local rescue group.
