So....I know this is not the time for me to post this, bcs of Fast-a-thon and my exam tomorrow, but it was on my mind and I wanted to post it lol. I think IOC should do an event for Eid (next year and on). First, I see many of my friends from out of state at different universities going to and planning Eid events via their respective MSAs...whether Eid banquets or Eid Extravaganzas or something called EIDRAGEOUS (Im trying to find out what that is lol), but all in all, theyre usually nice, large, fancy, fun celebrations or socials. Second, EID IS A TIME TO POTENTIALLY UNITE ALL MUSLIMS! I mean, I believe all Muslims, regardless of their level of religiosity, celebrate or acknowledge Eid, and having a celebration of Eid would be IOCs chance to reach out to all Muslim students on campus, in a neutral event that would appeal to many, as Im sure students would want to go to something to celebrate their holiday, it may remind them of home, etc. This would not be limited to one ethnicity. And its not an event like a BBQ that may appeal to or attract a certain group of people (plus usually ppl like to dress up or have more formal-types of events on Eid). Third, its important that IOC - the representative of Muslim students on campus - encourages and fosters the celebration of the only Islamic holiday that falls during the Fall-Spring academic calendar. It makes people proud of their religion, and inculcates a sense of community and unity. And it allows more exposure to Muslim traditions to non-Muslims. Usually Eid has come around the same time as Fast-A-Thon. From the viewpoint of community and whatnot, I feel an Eid event would achieve more of IOCs mission/goal, and appeal to more people, than a Fast-a-thon. But, the good thing is that Eid is getting earlier so it wont coincide with FAT, and next year it will be around Sept 23-24...in the middle of the week...and Fast-a-thon could be pushed a little later, to also avoid falling around midterms. Thus, I feel IOC has the ability to organize some sort of fun celebration of Eid. I would be happy to help. And, just in case if IOC decides to go with this idea and do something for Eid, I have gone ahead and reserved the Grand Ballroom on Sat, Sept 27, 2015, just so we have that date booked and available for us lol (eboard: its not under IOC as of now, so dont worry) :)
