So I met a Vietnamese guy last night. On the last hours of 2014. I was sitting next to the door outside the bar and he came to me and said I looked like i need someone to talk to. He introduced himself and we had a great conversation. Then he asked me if its hard being black in South Africa. A very tricky question.......... When I was coming to Cape Town, my dad was against the whole Idea. He said coloured people will frustrate me at work because they are the most racist. I chose to ignore his concerns because thats not why I wanted to come to Cape Town and I wasnt gonna focus my energy on petty issues like racism. All I wanted to do was to create a beautiful life for myself. South Africa has a very dark past and the shadows are still lurking. Especially in Cape Town. You may chose to ignore racist people but that doesnt necessarily mean they will ignore you. Somehow you will always be affected. Sometimes by accident and sometimes by intent. And when it happens, you question yourself. Questions spiralling down into an abyss of depression and hopelessness as youre trying to understand what you did wrong and if you are to blame. Looking deep into the skin in your arm; the melanin under the epidermis. And when it strikes, it feels like a bat on your face. But you smile, you just keep smiling.
