So, I read Divergent because i had thought I wanted to see the movie. The writing isnt bad. Its not purple, its clear. The characters are simple, but interesting to a point and the book moves along pretty decently. Its hard not to see the parallels to The Hunger Games, but the book does enough to distinguish itself. Sadly, the world the book creates pissed me off. I found it very intellectually non-satisfying that humans would craft a society as described. Its central issue is so obvious that the 16 year old main character describes it aptly in the first 40 pages and your first thought is um, why doesnt everyone realize that? and then about 40 pages later you realize oh, everyone realizes that and just ignores it. In The Hunger Games, the conflict is clear - the capital is a ruling class exploiting the districts via repressions, laws, military might and economical power. They do so because they won the war. OK. Harsh but i can see that. Divergent....i cant say without spoiling the story, but I was really hoping for a more cogent universe instead of hand-waving the groundwork so that a somewhat cliche romance story could happen.
