So I referred to The Bible as a textbook in a prior post today. An older, Christian woman replied to me that she hopes that she is misunderstanding my statement and that I did not refer to The Bible as a textbook. Im irked and feel like I need to voice my opinion, on this issue of The Bible in our politics, a little louder. So here I go, yet again, The Bible is The Bible when its referred to at church or in the privacy of individuals. In the courtroom, when it is cited as evidence, The Bible is a textbook. A compilation of ancient data, through stories, that give insight into our existence. As do the works of Aristotle, Aquinas, Rousseau, Locke, and others whose textbooks have been so influential in our political knowledge and insight. However, The Bible has been a source of apparent political truth for many Americans. Those political writings are textbooks, as is The Bible, when used to rationalize how our government should run. Also, let it be known that I am a spiritual person and do respect the teachings of The Bible as valuable knowledge of humans relationship with the higher power. However, to use the book to oppress others in modern society is an appalling act in complete disgrace to our designer and our reason for living.
