So I saw Into the Woods. Maybe Im the one fault here in that I had no clue this was a musical. So when the movie starts and the first 10 minutes is this one long, uninteresting song, I began to worry. I have nothing against musicals. I went to see Mama Mia of my own choice. I was also one of only three males in attendance and of those three males the only one younger than 60. But I digress. Here is my problem with the movie. The songs are just not good. One issue being that the studio decided it was more important to hire a name than an actor that could sing. So other than Anna Kendrick we get the likes of Johnny Depp because people love to see him in crazy dressed up roles. Not that he was the actor for the part. The other issue being that the songs are just not memorable. I dont expect every musical to have a Let it Go that gets played everywhere and reenacted by everyone with child and a cellphone. But I do expect a musical number to be catchy. Other than Your Fault which I think I only enjoyed because of amount of back and forth dialogue, I wasnt enthused with any of the songs in the movie. I debated leaving several times. The story itself was good enough. It is a mix of several fairy tales into a single connected story. It is on the dark side and may not be right for some kids. That depends on you. Just know that this is not your typical happy ending Disney movie. For instance, Cinderellas sisters have their eyes plucked out by birds in her story. Its still a Disney movie so you dont see anything other than the birds swarming the girls and them screaming. One thing during the credits but not worth staying for. Just one of the characters saying I wish.
