So I slacked on my gratitude list last week..so Ill post about gratitude thats been on my mind lately: Clayoquot Sound, summer of 1993. I learned so many things. My true introduction to First Nations people and their culture, the meaning of giving up your freedom for something you believe in, how to use the media to raise awareness, and the incredible power of a small group of concerned citizens. I spent three months at the Clayoquot Sound Peace camp, leaving only to attend Grateful Dead shows or go to the Ivanhoe... Im forever in debt to the Friends of Clayoquot Sound, WC2, and every individual who was arrested that summer for teaching me things I still carry with me today. You took me by Zodiac to see trees older than i can comprehend. Farmers dropped off food for us to prepare and eat. You picked me up hitchhiking from the ferry in Nanaimo. You taught me to respect and not fear bears, and that there is a good way of living that is well worth practicing. Kennedy lake is still a happy place I can go to in my thoughts any time I want - and remember how much this one summer and this one random group of people who gathered for a cause means to me. This video doesnt do that summer justice, but it does end with that morning the band Midnight Oil came and played for us. And that was pretty awesome, too.
