So, I thought I might get a conversation going tonight. Corporations exist for one reason: The purpose of a corporation is to maximise shareholder value - nothing else - and their actions (investment) encourage that goal. Corporations are vehicles for generating profit. They are not vehicles for protecting the environment . They are not vehicles for protecting the rights of workers. They are not vehicles for deciding what is legal and what is not. They are not vehicles for determining what is ethical and what is not. So, when corporations make campaign contributions to politicians, they are following their only mandate, to make profits for their shareholders. The politicians may say: I have integrity. They cant buy my vote! But, corporations dont make expenditures except that they maximize shareholder value. Year after year, they pay politicians in the form of campaign contributions. If this strategy didnt work, they could not do it!! It would be against their one and only reason for existing.
