So, I want to tell you a story of how a few local businesses screwed themselves out of my business and any potential business I may send their way. My computer went belly up on Tuesday. I wanted to support local business, so I asked for some recommendations. Called the first one, left a voicemail and, because his recording said For immediate response, please text me. So I also texted. FOUR hours later he texts back saying he will call me in 3 hours because he was currently working with a client. FOUR hours later, still no call and received another recommendation. I immediately called as now I have been out of business an entire day. Left a voicemail. In near panic, I got a third recommendation, but now it was after hours and called Wednesday morning. Two hours later he calls back, says he is on the road and will call me at 3pm to get more details. Meanwhile, still no return call from the first nor the second repair guy. I go to Best Buy / Geek Squad to ask a few questions before I bring the computer in. Basically, they pack it up, ship it out diagnose, let me know what the deal is, repair it (if they can) and ship it back. $800+ THREE times the cost of going with a local guy. However, at 3pm the THIRD guy does NOT call back! This morning, the first guy calls me. He doesnt apologize for the delay. I am ready to rail on him, but dont. We talked about the problem, possible solutions, and timelines ... I keep him on the phone for over an hour. It is then that I fess up and tell him that I was unable to wait and give my money to a local entrepreneur and that Best Buy now had it. I also told him that I would NEVER give him any referrals. The second guy never returned my call. The third guy just called, apologize profusely (says he dropped his phone and could not make calls) and he did not get home until 9:30 which would have been too late to call. I tell him that I couldnt wait. He understood that he lost business. So, either these people are completely inept OR they have so much business that they can afford to not return calls.
