So I was RIGHT THERE with him for 5 dimensions. Im really good at the first four and the fifth seamed entirely reasonable, but when he spun around the 6th, then 7th, and finally 8th I was lost. Its not that I dont understand the concept of dimensions in a model, but I just dont have a handle on what these other forces are and how they relate to mass and energy. Sigh. Actually, the way he slips them in with little explanation, he may not have more than a mathematical understanding of them himself. It is an odd fact about particle physics that most people doing it dont fundamentally understand a lot of it any better than knowing that the math makes sense. Its why I love the Feynman Lectures - brilliant as all frack, Feynman, in his best Barney Rubble impersonation, just says - hey, dont even bother trying to understand it - but know that it does work this way!
