So, I was driving from Denver to Monterey and, although I can do it in 2 days I decided to take 3 so that I could actually go and see stuff en route. I was also taking the Northern route as I wanted to see Salt Lake City and I knew I could do Denver to there easily on day 1. I managed to miss Salt Lake (don’t ask) but my SatNav was showing a bunch of hotels about 50 miles away in a place called Wendover so I punched the Cruise Control to 80 and settled down to do one more hour. As I went down the highway I realised that I knew Wendover but could not think why. It was only when I saw the sign for the Bonneville Salt Flats that it clicked - this is the city where all the record breakers stay. I picked a hotel at random and, whilst checking in, asked the manager how far it was. He told me it was about 6 miles, that this was Speed Week, and that i should see him in the morning when I checked out. Next morning he gave me a pass for Speed Week so I set off. I was driving a POS rental so was not going to set any records BUT I have driven, at high speed, on the salt, at Bonneville, during Speed Week. I know that is not everyone’s dream but it has been on my bucket list for years and I did it completely by accident!
