So, I was listening to the New Testament scholar Mark Goodacres excellent podcast this morning, NT Pod. In it he mentioned an individual often overlooked in the Bible. The female apostle Junia, mentioned in Romans 16:7. Heres the translation in the NIV: Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was. The name Junia is always female in the ancient world. Later scribes sometimes translated the name Junias to make it masculine, but the majority of ancient manuscripts keep it Junia. Some Bibles (the ESV for instance) have translated the verse to read: They are well known to the apostles, rather than They are outstanding among the apostles, but Prof. Goodacre puts forward a very strong case why the later translation should be the preferred translation. Prof. Goodacre points out that Andronicus and Junia were most likely a husband and wife team, and Im reminded of the co-ministers Priscilla and Aquila. Goodacre also goes on to mention that Junia may not be the first female apostle, and that that honor may go the Mary Magdalene. The next podcast in the series is actually about that, so should be interesting to hear.
